Grassroots health education with the Warriors for Peace
July 02, 2008

In July 2, 2008 HELP for peace started their pilot program with education of the seven Warriors for peace trainees, It gave them background on Food and Nutrition, including Malnutrition, Hygiene, Water and Environmental Sanitation, and the like, which the organization sees its great importance particularly to the ba rrios or far flung areas that the other medical groups or health centers cannot anymore reach. This module was initiated to the Warriors Academy, a group of students who came from different conflict-affected areas in the Philippines which were brought to the Niall O’ Brien Center to be taught of Aikido, a form of martial arts, and other forms of education such as Peace and Health which they will be teaching and spreading to their respective communities later on.

The class started with a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis in order to measure how much they know about themselves and how will they will be able to use their strengths and opportunities to influence others to become a more productive citizen of their respective communities. . And on the discussion proper, the warriors were taught on the basic concepts of food and nutrition: Why should a person eat right in the first place, what are the most important foods, the secondary foods, and in which food will they be able to find rich source of vitamins and other essential nutrients.

In a way, the program helps to find ways on how to become healthy while spending less. Also, the program builds a strong foundation which will indirectly help solve the country’s problem on Health, Education, and PEACE. The organization, in short, is on its way to help build this nation, the Philippines. This module will run until August 19, 2008 with two meetings per week.
